Hmm, you raise an interesting point. First let me give you a slight background on myself. Despite playing next-gen games like Mass effect 2, MAG and stuff like that I still consider myself primarily an oldskool gamer; having an extensive library of most consoles and their respective top games, including most of Treasure's and TAITO's work even the coveted Radiant silvergun sitting happily on my shelf (and still gets at least an hour of play every week) with two gamertrips to Tokyo a year

Darius Gaiden is personally my favorite Darius; but you have to realize that Darius BURST is made from the ground up to be played for short "bursts" on the go, when your commuting etc. Since it has no official Western release either, we must go from the assumption that it's written for the Japanese market as well who are even more keen on the short-play games for their accesibility. And it's in that respect that I've rated Darius BURST as per handheld gaming standards.

Darius BURST manages to provide a solid shooter mechanic in bite-sized chunks.
On a perfect run I can just finish it in one 35 minute sitting heading to and from work; it's perfect. Sure, the game's life is (cheaply) extended with time trials and burst mode (where you have one life and need a perfect run) I still think that it's did what it set out to do; to become a good bite-sized SHMUP to play on the go.
Having an insanely decked out branching level mechanic from the oldskool games would prove too much.

This still leaves the discussion that every stage, no matter which path does have the same boss a valid one; but it's a very minor gripe if I compare it to some of the other totally lackluster shooter experiences the PSP have to offer.

All in all, the PSP could simply get a great library of SHMUP's by porting the multitude of games available on the PS2.

Should Darius burst have been a console release; than I would've definitly mentioned both your points as being big negatives. As it stands tough; I'll revise my review slightly to push the arguement that BURST is rated purely on handheld standards. Thanks for the constructive feedback !

What a terrible review, it doesn't even mention that the game barely branches out and that bosses for a stage are reused regardless of path, excluding the end bosses. As a shmup it's just average, and as a Darius game it's just plain terrible. Shame that Taito outsourced one of their best franchises to some no-name company.

Great review. You really tempt me to buy it. But I'm afraid I don't have time to play at the moment and shouldn't... sighs.
Anyway - have fun with your Mage :)

Oh man. I haven't really touched MP untill i finished the SP which was quite enjoyable, and offcourse you can expect a review of that portion later.
But now that i've played the MP for two nights in a row I can wholeheartedly support Brett's bold claim of just blowing 60$ for the MP itself.
It's just that good !

As is mentioned before the game is incredibly well balanced and it all feels and seems fair no matter what equipment you pit against eachother.
Speaking of equipment, there's alot of that ! Optional backpacks you can find scattered troughout the level provide you with abilities.
The SP only went as far as giving you a jetpack, but there's so much more to run a muck with in MP.
Tremor pack, creates earthquakes around you that causes buildings to crumble, the rhino pack allows you to smash trough objects and other players
whilst the vision pack allows you to spot those annoying campers.

Where as COD4 MP had the XP craxck going for it, in RFG every battle will be completly different and unique in the way the players cause havoc with the enviroment
creating new places to hide or depending on the strategy all out destroying any chance of cover you may have had.
So I totally couldn't care less about the XP system in the RFG MP but hey for those crackheads it's there along with a ton of trophy's to be earned.

For those of you lucky enough to live in America, just go out and rent it i'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed.
