SNIKT!

SNIKT!

I won’t bother commenting on how extremely non canonical to the comics this movie is. Frankly having quit reading Mutant books in 1991 I am not even qualified to do so.

The first half of X-men origins: Wolverine is so mindblowingly perfect that it made me think that this movie would wash away all the massive suck that was the previous X-men movies. (X-men 2 being the only half way decent one of the bunch) Unfortunately 3/4 of the way in when they started throwing in Random X-men characters (apparantly picked from a hat) I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. This dread was justified in the last 20 minutes when the producers of this film manage to make one of comics most badass characters look like an emasculated chump.

For the most part the casting was great. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine. He has always done a fantastic job with the character and in my opinion, has always been the one thing I could never complain about in the previous films. He Brings the intensity of the character up a notch here and manages to keep the movie on the rails mostly despite the ham fisted melodrama of the films last act. The actor playing Sabertooth managed to make the character interesting, no mean feat given that he has never been a character I particularly cared for in the comics.

The action is great even with the typically excessive application of wire work.

Despite my extreme annoyance with the ending of this movie I think the strength of the first act, and authenticity of Jackman’s portrayal of everyone’s favorite Mutant Canucklehead makes this a must see for anyone who ever liked the X-men, and EASILY the best in the series.
